Yesterday got me thinking about others killed in the name of war. My great-grandfather was killed in action in the First World War. He is buried in Ypres, Belgium. I plan on visiting the grave later this year or early next year. We're trying to find out his name at the moment! He died when my nan was eight years old. M

Yesterday got me thinking about others killed in the name of war. My great-grandfather was killed in action in the First World War. He is buried in Ypres, Belgium. I plan on visiting the grave later this year or early next year. We're trying to find out his name at the moment! He died when my nan was eight years old. My great-cousin has visited the stone, and I've contacted him for information. I've looked and found some 'Harman' surnames who died in 1916 (my nan was born in 1908 and was eight when her dad was killed in action) on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission website; one of them must be him. The "Debt of Honour Register" is the Commission's database listing the 1.7 million men and women of the Commonwealth forces who died during the two World Wars and the 23,000 cemeteries, memorials and other locations worldwide where they are commemorated. The register can also be searched for details of the 67,000 Commonwealth civilians who died as a result of enemy action in the Second World War.
