This photo was taken around the time Howbridge School worked with Ryan on story telling; this moment was a year after Ryan returned to full time at school after a year of disruption. Tonight he showed a story he has been writing on his iPad - he said he likes to write stories. The story is really good, it has characters, detail, scenario and develops… Ryan really struggles with spelling, but loves how the iPad guesses what he is trying to spell and gives multiple options (above the keyboard display) as suggestions while he types; he monitors the evolving suggestions as he writes and copies the word he thinks is right and types it out in full. For moments the suggestion is not giving options he recognises he presses the microphone button and dictates what he is trying to spell, the iPad then displays the word in text. What was interesting here for me was that we didn’t teach him how to do this, he self taught his own strategy; he said he likes the iPad because it helps him without him keeping having to ask a person for (what you and I would find) an easy spelling, he finds this embarrassing… he struggles with spelling anything more than four letters.
