The End of an Era: Chelmsford Community Radio's Moulsham Mill Studios

It’s both nostalgic and bittersweet to see the former Moulsham Mill radio studios being dismantled this week, marking the end of an incredible 11-year chapter of broadcasting. These studios, originally funded by the National Lottery, have been home to countless volunteers, aspiring broadcasters, and community voices—many of whom have gone on to work in commercial media at BBC, ITV, Global Radio (Heart), Bauer Radio, and beyond. It’s a shame to see the studios go, but without income from the coffee shop, the rising rent made it impossible to sustain. That said, what’s truly remarkable is that we managed to keep the studios running for five years after the coffee shop originally closed—thanks to the £35,000 raised through crowdfunding. Every single pound was stretched to its absolute limit, a testament to the dedication, passion, and resilience of everyone involved. Chelmsford Community Radio has always been more than just a radio station. It’s a place where people learned, grew, and launched careers—a training ground that gave volunteers their first taste of real broadcasting.
