Last night, Jus and I were lucky enough to get limited tickets to the Voices of Unity event at Amelia’s school — an amazing evening that had been 18 months in the making. Amelia joined the project partway through as part of the school’s Rhythm and Soul Choir, she sang songs on stage with the others, including Man in the Mirror (I always thought the lyrics were 'I'm standing with the main in the mirror', learned something new there!). The two hour event unfolded across three areas of the school: the theatre, featuring live performances, dance, film, comedy, and music; the canteen area, offering samples of world food; and finally, the main school hall, showcasing music and more world dance. The Voices of Unity project gave Plymouth young people the chance to explore themes of identity, belonging, and community. Working with local artists, they created a mural legacy piece reflecting their experiences and hopes for a brighter future. It all culminated in a powerful finale, with the entire audience joining together in a huge circle to take part in the final performance, involving african drums and chanting.
